Much of the<br \/>\nwork of current computational scientists (that is: researchers who are using<br \/>\ncomputer models and routines to solve the problems in their discipline, as opposed<br \/>\nto &#8220;computer scientists&#8221; who are developing the computers themselves)<br \/>\nis based on the idea that they are running a process to solve their problems<br \/>\nand that the process itself is the solution, not the product of the process<br \/>\nonce it is finished. Of the several ways in which process can be (and has been)<br \/>\ndescribed, for our purposes <em>play<\/em> might be the most useful. As a critical<br \/>\naspect of today&#8217;s information, play has three manifestations that define our<br \/>\ninformation age: <em>profusion<\/em>, <em>complexity<\/em>, and<em> emergence<\/em>.<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellpadding=\"5\" width=\"80%\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><em>Profusion<\/em> is the most immediately obvious idea. We have a &#8216;cornucopia&#8217;<br \/>\nof information at hand.<br \/>\n<em>Complexity<\/em> is at a deeper level. It<br \/>\nis opposite to the information idioms of previous ages. With complexity,<br \/>\ninformation is not linear nor predictable.<br \/>\n<em>Emergent<\/em> systems<br \/>\nlead from studies of complexity. They embody concepts like &#8216;self-organized&#8217;<br \/>\nand &#8216;adaptive&#8217; systems using &#8216;feedback loops&#8217;. Emergent systems have another<br \/>\nproperty: they follow the &#8220;arrow of time&#8221; (Hobart &amp; Schiffman<br \/>\n238).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are pleny of other discussions and explanations of their analysis of<br \/>\nthese concepts.
